Creating Communication

A participant and process led inclusive arts project funded by an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant.

I worked with disabled artists at Pure Innovations in Stockport on a clay-based investigation of non-typical communication methods. The project spanned four months, beginning with creative research, developed upon with an individualised participant-led support approach, and culminating in two successful exhibitions of the works produced at Sleepy Parrot Studios and Arc Centre. Over half of the pieces were also chosen to be exhibited at the Manchester Open exhibition at HOME.

The exhibitions were planned and curated with a sharp focus on accessibility. I created a multi-sensory touch-encouraged exhibition featuring an audio tour. We produced poetic audio descriptions of each of the works, written and recorded by the participants, and an easy-read document created by the artists. There was large-print, braille, and private tours available. Between consultation, delivery and install, the project created 7 paid roles for disabled and neurodivergent creatives in Greater Manchester.
